Description
Ancient Olympia
Run and jump in the footsteps of ancient Greek athletes at the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, in ancient Greece, a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the most famous and important sporting events in the ancient world, honoring Zeus; the Olympic Games. Channel your inner champion as you discover this remarkable site. Feel the spiritual and ideological force that drove the athletes there thousands of years ago, every four years.
The Olympic flame altar is a symbol of the Olympic Games, the revival of which, in 1896, through the efforts of Pierre de Coubertin, illustrates the lasting nature of the ideals of peace, justice, progress and the values of fair competition that were established during the ancient Games.
Ancient Olympia is one of the most influential ancient Greek sanctuaries, located in western Peloponnese, in Elis. It is positioned in a serene and rich valley at the confluence of the Alpheios and the Kladeos rivers.
The site covers an expanded area of ruins scattered among low trees, as well as the ancient stadium where the Olympics took place. An impressive array of artifacts which were unearthed during excavations are on exhibition at the nearby Olympia Museum that we will visit together: the statue of Hermes of Praxiteles will take your breath away!
You will find incredible sculptures, such as the decoration of the temple of Zeus and the statue of Nike of Paionios.
Driving from Athens and passing by the famous Corinth Canal (short stop for photos), we will reach the archaeological site of Olympia. The tour includes a short stop at the modern village of Olympia, where you will be given time to stroll around the streets or to relax at one of the local coffee shops or have lunch at a local restaurant. Then we will drive back to Athens.
Duration of visit: almost 3 hours (archaeological site + museum)
